ABSTRACT WORKS

Abstract sculpture by Jim HewesThe abstract sculpture of James Hewes is a direct result of the drawings and drypoint etchings he creates.

A sculptor whose work range encompasses both figurative sculpture and abstract sculpture - when taking on a solely abstract sculptor viewpoint, James was influenced by the Surrealist abstract movement of Automatism: dictation of thought without control of the mind. This inspiration is evident in the various stages of his process in creating his abstract art.

His in an intuitive way of drawing. He begins by making lines on a page without thinking of an object or form, recording all in a sketch book. After a period of time, he reworks the flat drawing and includes perspective lines, using the"dry point" technique of etching.

From these abstract sketches / abstract etchings, he creates three-dimensional abstract sculpture forms, primarily using clay as his medium. The drawings / drypoint etchings serve as "blueprints" that are integral in the completion of the sculptural works.
