All of the figurative sculpture by US sculptor James Hewes is made directly from live artist models. It is his desire to capture the gesture and beauty of the model in clay in a lyrical nude interpretation of a traditional art form.
The model is abstracted to represent the universal quality and beauty of the human form. Using the immediacy inherent in wet clay, he translates his visual observation into a completed ceramic piece.
Hewes finds that his abstract sculptures are influenced by the balance of object and abstraction found in these figurative studies.
