GARDEN SCULPTURE & FOUNTAINS

Garden sculpture - fountain commissionThe garden sculptures of James Hewes evolved as he realized how easily his abstract forms lent themselves to including running water.

To study fountain work, James (a sculptor now based in Montana) first participated in two clay factory workshops. One was at Mission Clay in Niles, CA, and the other was at Gladding McBean in Lincoln, CA. The access to unfired clay pipe led to a fountain commission for the San Francisco Arts Commission that was temporarily installed in Golden Gate Park. His experience with these large projects have been influential in his continued work, both self-originated and by commission, on smaller sculptures for ponds and gardens. His interest in creating outdoor sculpture, garden sculpture has never waned since!
